Christmas Elf Ornament – Free Pattern

Today we’ll continue to crochet our Plush Ornaments Collection. So without further ado, please welcome the little Elf 🎄 How can you resist that smile?
It’s just as easy and quick as the other two, I hope you’ll enjoy making him too.

Materials
Super Bulky chenille yarn (weight 6) in: skin color of your choice, green, white, color of your choice for the hair strands
6mm hook
10mm safety eyes
Fiberfill
Scissors, stitch markers, tapestry needle
Black cotton yarn for embroidery
Thread in the color of your choice to hang the ornament
Blush for the cheeks (optional)
Little jingle bell for the hat (optional)
Abbreviations
MR: magic ring
FO: fasten off
CC: color change
st: stitch
rnd: round
ch: chain
sl-st: slip stitch
sc: single crochet
inc: increase
dec: invisible decrease
fp-sc: front post single crochet *
bp-sc: back post single crochet *
BLO: back loops only
FLO: front loops only

Notes
This pattern is written in U.S terminology. You can use any yarn weight or type, adapt your hook size accordingly.
Closing the last rnd: Using a tapestry needle, go though the front loop of each st in the last rnd and pull yarn to close. Make a little knot in one of the sts and hide the tail.
I’m a lefty! If you’re right-handed, you’ll notice that some of my pictures may look inverted when compared to your work.

Head – use skin color and a 6mm hook
Rnd 1) 6 sc in a MR (6)
Rnd 2) 6 inc (12)
Rnd 3) (1 sc, 1 inc)x6 (18)
Rnd 4) (2 sc, 1 inc)x6 (24)
Rnd 5-10) 24 sc around (24) [6 rnds]
Rnd 11) (2 sc, 1 dec)x6 (18)
Insert safety eyes between rnds 6-7, leave 3 free sts between the eyes.
Rnd 12) (1 sc, 1 dec)x6 (12)
Stuff firmly
Rnd 13) 6 dec (6)
FO and close the last rnd. Weave in tail.

Hat – use green, white yarn and a 6mm hook
Start with green yarn
Rnd 1) 6 sc in a MR (6)

FO and leave a long tail for sewing.

Ears – use skin color and a 6mm hook
Insert hook vertically on rnd 8, about 3 sts from the eye. Attach yarn with a sl-st.
ch 3, start in the 2nd ch from the hook and make 1 sc, 1 hdc
FO leaving a tail.
using a tapestry needle and the end tail, insert needle in the next free st of the head (rnd 7) and pull out with beginning tail. Make a knot with both tails and hide them inside the head.
Repeat on the other side.


Hair – use hair color of your choice and a tapestry needle
Make a line in the middle of the head, start at the top (around rnds 2-3) and insert needle between rnds 5-6 (1 rnd above the eyes). Go over the sts 3-4 times.

Repeat to make a total of 3 hair strands, leaving 1 free sts in between each strand. You can also add a hair strand on the sides of head, going from the top of the head all the way down to the ears.


Assembly
Sew the hat on the head. Leave 2 free rnds on the front between the hat and the eyes. The hair strands should be visible.
On the sides, the hat should be place right behind the ears.
The hat should go all the way down the head, around rnds 11-12.



Embroidery
Nose: Embroider a nose between rnds 7-8, between the eyes, in the space of 2 sts. Go over the sts 3-4 times.

Smile: Embroider the mouth 1 rnd below the nose (rnds 8-9): make a straight line in the space of 7 sts, pull out 1 rnd below, in the middle, pass needle under the thread and insert needle in the same st. Bring beginning and end tails to the same st, make a knot and hide tails inside the head.


Jingle Bells Rock: You can add a jingle bell to rnd 1 of the hat if you wish.
Blush: Add blush to the cheeks.
Thread: Cut a piece of thread in the color of your choice and attach it to the hat, around rnd 10. The ornament should stay straight when you hold it by the thread. Make a knot and trim the ends.
Your Christmas Elf is ready !
