Reindeer Ornament 🦌 – Free Pattern
Hello everyone!
It’s time for our Plush Ornaments Collection 🎄 and the star is 🥁… the reindeer! 🦌
Fun Facts: Did you know that Santa’s reindeers made their first appearance in 1821, in an anonymous illustrated children’s poem published in New York, but Rudolph wasn’t created until 1939 by a department store in Chicago as part of a marketing strategy? Also, all Santa’s reindeer would most likely be female since male reindeer shed their antlers after the mating season is over, which happens in early December.
On that note, let’s call our little reindeer Ruby and get to work!

Materials
Super Bulky chenille yarn (weight 6) in: brown, dark brown, red, cream
5mm and 6mm hooks
10mm safety eyes
Fiberfill
Scissors, stitch markers, tapestry needle
Thread in the color of your choice to hang the ornament
Abbreviations
MR: magic ring
FO: fasten off
st: stitch
rnd: round
ch: chain
sl-st: slip stitch
sc: single crochet
inc: increase
dec: invisible decrease
BLO: back loops only
FLO: front loops only
Notes
This pattern is written in U.S terminology. You can use any yarn weight or type, adapt your hook size accordingly.
Closing the last rnd: Using a tapestry needle, go though the front loop of each st in the last rnd and pull yarn to close. Make a little knot in one of the sts and hide the tail.
I’m a lefty! If you’re right-handed, you’ll notice that some of my pictures may look inverted when compared to your work.

Head – use brown yarn and a 6mm hook
Rnd 1) 6 sc in a MR (6)
Rnd 2) 6 inc (12)
Rnd 3) (1 sc, 1 inc)x6 (18)
Rnd 4) (2 sc, 1 inc)x6 (24)
Rnd 5-10) 24 sc around (24) [6 rnds]
Rnd 11) (2 sc, 1 dec)x6 (18)
Insert safety eyes between rnds 6-7, leave 3 free sts between the eyes.
Rnd 12) (1 sc, 1 dec)x6 (12)
Stuff firmly
Rnd 13) 6 dec (6)
FO and close the last rnd. Weave in tail.
Muzzle – use cream yarn and a 5mm hook
Rnd 1) 6 sc in a MR (6)
Rnd 2) 3 inc, 3 sc (9)
Rnd 3) 9 sc around (6)
FO and leave a tail for sewing.
Sew muzzle on the face, make sure the inc from rnd 2 are at the bottom. The top of the muzzle should be between rnds 7-8 (1 rnd below the eyes). The bottom should be between rnds 10-11. You can stuff lightly before sewing.
Using red yarn, embroider a nose on top of rnd 2 of the muzzle: make a V leaving 1 free st in the middle and go over the sts multiple times until you fill up the space.
Ears – use brown yarn and a 6mm hook
Insert hook horizontally on the side of the head, between rnds 3-4. Attach yarn with a sl-st.
* Ch 4, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, make 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 sc * (3)
FO leaving a tail. Using a tapestry needle and end tail, insert needle in the next free st of the head and pull out in the middle, with beginning tail. Make a knot with both tails and hide them inside the head. Repeat on the other side to make the 2nd ear.
Antlers – use dark brown and a 5mm hook
Insert you hook diagonally on top of the head on rnd 2. Attach yarn with a sl-st.
*Ch 7 (main ch), starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, make 2 sl-st, ch3, 2 sl-st on ch 3, 3 sl-st on main ch*
FO leaving a tail. Using a tapestry needle and end tail, insert needle in the head and pull out the same st as beginning tail. Make a knot with both tails and hide them inside the head. Repeat on the other side to make the 2nd antler.
Details
Using cream yarn, embroider a few vertical lines on the forehead.
Thread: Cut a piece of thread in the color of your choice and attach it to rnd 1 of the head. The ornament should stay straight when you hold it by the thread. Make a knot and trim the ends.
Your Reindeer is ready !
