No-sew Musical Flower Pillow – Free Pattern

Dear crochet friends,

If you know me a little, you’re probably aware of my love for flowers. I often use them in my designs, I have flowers everywhere in my house, walls, body (a couple tattoos) and garden. For this project, instead of a little decoration to elevate the cuteness level of a design, I want the flower to be the star 🌼💖 So let’s make a little musical flower pillow !

This is the perfect handmade touch for a nursery, plus you can find pretty much any tune in music boxes these days. Pick that one special melody that you love singing to your baby (for me it’s Somewhere Over the Rainbow) and let’s get started !

I chose this music box from Glückswolke, the size is perfect for this project (not sponsored at all, just a genuine recommendation because I love the quality AND it can go in the washing machine)

Materials

Super Bulky (weight 6) blanket yarn in 2 different colors. For this project, I used:

  • 190g of Big Twist Plush (Dusty Rose) for the petals
  • 30g of Bernat Baby Blanket Frosting (Golden Hour) for the center

Please note that depending on tension and hook size, you may need more yarn than the amount I used to complete the project.

  • Fiberfill
  • 1 music box (no bigger than 2 in x 2 in)
  • 6mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Abbreviations

MR – magic ring

sc – single crochet

sl-st – slip stitch

inc – increase

dec – invisible decrease

BLO – back loops only

FO – fasten off

Petals – use color A and a 6mm hook

Make 6

Rnd 1) 6 sc in MR (6)

Rnd 2) 6 inc (12)

Rnd 3) (1 sc, 1 inc)x6 (18)

Rnd 4) (2 sc, 1 inc)x6 (24)

Rnds 5-7) 24 sc around (24) [3 rnds]

Rnd 8) (2 sc, 1 dec)x6 (18)

Rnds 9-10) 18 sc around (18) [2 rnds]

Rnd 11) (1 sc, 1 dec)x6 (12)

FO and weave in ends. Repeat the instructions until you have 6 petals. When you finish the last petal, use the last stitch to change colors (color B) and FO color A.

Center – use color B and a 6mm hook

Rnd 1) Continue with color B. Leave the 6th petal on your hook, add the 5th petal and make 6 sl-st starting in the 1st st of the last rnd. Add the 4th petal and make 6 sl-st. Keep adding the petals in the same way, finish with 6 sc in the last petal (the one that was on the hook from the start). You’ll have worked 36 sl-st. (36)

Rnd 2) BLO 36 sc around (36)

Rnd 3) 36 sc around (36)

Rnd 4) (4 sc, 1 dec)x6 (30)

Rnd 5) (3 sc, 1 dec)x6 (24)

Rnd 6) (2 sc, 1 dec)x6 (18)

Rnd 7) (1 sc, 1 dec)x6 (12)

Rnd 8) 6 dec (6)

FO and close the last rnd (pass needle through the last 6 front loops and pull).

Flip the flower and attach yarn to the last free st of the 6th petal (where color change started on the other side). Important: leave a very long beginning tail (about 30 in – 70 cm) outside the flower.

We have 6 free sts on each petal to work on:

Rnd 1) Make 6 sl-st in each petal until you close the round with 36 sl-st (36)

Rnd 2) BLO 36 sc around (36)

Rnd 3) (4 sc, 1 dec)x6 (30)

Add fiberfill to the petals (do not overstuff, we don’t want the petals to be too ’round’). Add some fiberfill to the center of the flower and place the music box (if you are not using a music box, you can stuff the center after rnd 6). There will be a gap between the petals, pass the cord of the music bow in one of those gaps so it stays outside.

Rnd 4) (3 sc, 1 dec)x6 (24)

Add some fiberfill around the music box

Rnd 5) (2 sc, 1 dec)x6 (18)

Rnd 6) (1 sc, 1 dec)x6 (12)

Rnd 7) 6 dec (6)

FO and close the last rnd (pass needle through the last 6 front loops and pull).

Use a tapestry needle and the beginning tail to close the gap between the petals with a couple of whip stitches all around. Make a knot and hide the tail inside the flower.

Your Musical Flower Pillow is ready !

Now all you have to do is play that tune and take a good nap.

I hope you enjoyed making this project with me.

See you soon !
