Bee My Valentine – Free Pattern

Looking for cute ways to say I love you ? Try this pattern!

Bee My Valentine is a cute twist on the classic (and simple) crochet bee. This pattern is a great option for beginners or for crocheters looking for a quick make.

I posted this little bee on my Instagram account last year, it was about time I added it to the blog as well. If you have already made this project, I have another brand new Valentine’s Day pattern coming up in the next few days, so stay tuned.

As usual, we will be working with super bulky chenille yarn, but feel free to adapt yarn type, weight and hook size according to your preferences.

Let’s get to work !

Materials

Yarn: Super Bulky (weight 6) chenille yarn in yellow, contrast color for the stripes, white, pink or red for the heart.

A long piece of black cotton yarn for embroidery.

Eyes: 1 pair of 12mm safety eyes

Hook: Whichever hook size you like to use with this type of yarn. Any size from 4.5mm to 6.5mm works out just fine. Personally, I like to use a 5.5mm hook. We’re going to use the same hook size for the whole project.

Tools: Tapestry needle, fiberfill, scissors, stitch markers.

Abbreviations

MR – magic ring

CC – contrast color

ch – chain

sc – single crochet

sl-st – slip stitch

inc – increase

dec – invisible decrease

hdc – half double crochet

FO – fasten off

Notes

This pattern is written in U.S terminology.

Work in continuous spirals, do not join rounds with a sl-st unless instructed in the pattern.

Use the invisible color change for a better result. You can see a post about it here.

Bee – use yellow and CC

Start with yellow

Rnd 1) 6 sc in a MR (6)

Rnd 2) 6 inc (12)

Rnd 3) (1 sc, 1 inc)x6 (18)

Rnd 4) (2 sc, 1 inc)x6 (24)

Rnd 5) (3 sc, 1 inc)x6 (30)

Rnd 6) (4 sc, 1 inc)x6 (36)

Insert safety eyes between rnds 4-5, leave 6 free sts between the eyes.

Rnds 7 & 8) 36 sc around (36) [2 rnds]

Change to CC, do not FO yellow

Rnds 9 & 10) 36 sc around (36) [2 rnds]

Change to yellow, do not FO CC

Rnds 11-13) 36 sc around (36) [3 rnds]

Change to CC, do not FO yellow

Rnds 14 & 15) 36 sc around (36) [2 rnds]

Change to yellow, FO CC

Rnds 16 &17) 36 sc around (36) [2 rnds]

Rnd 18) (4 sc, 1 dec)x6 (30)

Rnd 19) (3 sc, 1 dec)x6 (24)

Start stuffing

Rnd 20) (2 sc, 1 inc)x6 (18)

Rnd 21) (1 sc, 1 inc)x6 (12)

Finish stuffing

Rnd 22) 6 dec (6)

FO and close the last rnd (pass needle through the last 6 front loops and pull yarn). Weave in tail.

Wings – use white yarn

Make two.

Rnd 1) 6 sc in a MR (6)

Rnd 2) 6 inc-hdc (12)

Rnd 3) 12 hdc (12)

Rnd 4) 6 dec-hdc (6)

FO leaving a tail for sewing. Close the last round (pass needle through the last 6 front loops and pull yarn). Sew wings on top of the bee between rnds 11-12. Use the same sts to sew both wings so there’s no gap between them. Weave in ends.

Front Legs – Use your CC

Insert your hook vertically under the bee, aligned with the eyes, between rnds 9-10, attach yarn with a sl-st (doesn’t count as a st)

Ch 6, in the 2nd ch from the hook, make 3 sc and 1 sl-st all in the same ch. FO leaving a tail (we will use this tail to sew the heart onto the legs, don’t weave in).

Back Legs – Use your CC

Make the back legs in the same way, aligned with the front legs. Insert your hook between rnds 14-15 and repeat the instructions.

When you FO, use a tapestry needle to carry the tail through the remaining ch sts until you get to the body of the bee, make a little knot and hide the tails inside the body.

Heart – Use the color of your choice

To make the heart, we are going to crochet 2 separate pieces and join them.

1st piece:

Rnd 1) 6 sc in a MR (6)

Rnds 2-3) 12 sc around (12) [2 rnds]

FO and weave in end.

2nd piece (leave a long beginning tail outside):

Rnd 1) 6 sc in a MR (6)

Rnds 2-3) 12 sc around (12) [2 rnds]

Rnd 4) Leave the 2nd piece on the hook, insert your hook into a st of the 1st piece and crochet 12 sc around it, then 12 sc around the 2nd piece (24)

Rnd 5) 24 sc around (24)

Rnd 6) (2 sc, 1 dec)x6 (18)

Rnds 7-8) 18 sc (18) [2 rnds]

Rnd 9) (1 sc, 1 dec)x6 (12)

Rnd 10) 12 sc (12)

Stuff the heart

Rnd 11) 6 dec (6)

FO and weave in end. Use the beginning tail to sew the little gap in between the 1st and 2nd pieces. Weave in ends.

Sew the hands of the bee onto the first round of each piece of the heart. Weave in ends.

Details

Using black cotton yarn, make a little smile on your bee: pull out needle between rnds 2-3, count 6 sts to the side and insert needle (you should also be on rnds 2-3). Pull out needle 1 rnd below, in the middle of those 6 sts, pass needle under the thread and insert it back in the same st.

Add eyebrows 2 rnds above the eyes, in the space of 2 sts, aligned with the inner and outer corners of the eyes.

You can use pink yarn to make little cheeks in the space of 2 sts, 1 rnd below the eyes.

I also added a little flower to one of my bees, which I made with cotton yarn. If you want to make one too, here’s how:

Yellow: 6 sc in a MR, sl-st in the 1st sc to close (use the sl-st to change to CC)

Ch 4, starting in the 3rd ch from the hook ,make 1 hdc, 1 sc, 1 sl-st in the next st. Repat all around (you’ll have 6 petals). FO and sew the flower between rnds 8-9 of the bee, on the side of the ‘head’.

Your Valentine’s Bee is ready ! 🐝💖

I hope you enjoyed working on this project with me. Let me know if you have any questions !

Love,

-Clarissa
