Bunny Rattle 🐰 – Free Pattern

Hello crochet friends! đŸ§¶

Today I’m sharing with you a cute a quick make. I figured if we started to get ready for spring, maybe it would arrive a little earlier? đŸŒŒđŸŁ I really don’t like winter, so it’s worth a try 😣

This little bunny rattle makes a cute set with my Pom Pom Bunny, check it out if you haven’t made one yet 💖

For this pattern, I used the yarn Himagurumi from Himalaya Yarns. This is yarn made specially for amigurumis, made of 50% cotton and 50% acrylic yarn (weight 4). Therefore, the yarn is a little softer and shinier than the 100% cotton, which is nice for babies.

This was my first time using this yarn and I’m not disappointed. I’m very used to the Baby Dolphin chenille yarn, so it was nice to try something different. If you’re in Europe, you can order Himagurumi (and more) from Lily Wools on Etsy. They’re a brand new yarn shop based in France, my order came wrapped up so nicely and shipping was super fast. You can visit their Etsy shop here, and while you’re at it, use the code BOULETTEETCIE10 for 10% off your order.

So, let’s get started!

Materials

Himagurumi yarn in 3 different colors: 1 main color and 2 contrast colors (you can use any weight 4 yarn for this project). I used the colors 30105 (pearl), 30114 (rose), 30159 (mustard yellow). I needed about 30g of the main color, and 15g of each contrast color (please note that quantities may vary according to your tension, yarn and hook size).

Notes

Work in continuous spirals, do not join rnds with sl-st unless instructed in the pattern.

Closing the last rnd: Using a tapestry needle, go through the front loops of all the sts in the last rnd and pull yarn to close.

How to double the yarn: To double the yarn, you can simply use yarn from 2 skeins at the same time; or use the exterior tail from the skein as well as the center (pull yarn from the center and find the interior tail). Crochet with both strands at the same time.

Ears – Use MC and a 3mm hook

Avoid crocheting too tightly, the ear must not be stiff.

Rnd 1) 6 sc in a MR (6)

Rnd 2) 6 hdc-inc (12)

Rnd 3) 12 hdc (12)

Rnd 4) (1 hdc, 1 hdc-inc)x6 (18)

Rnds 5-7) 18 hdc (18) [3 Rnds]

Rnd 8) (4 hdc, 1 hdc-dec)x3 (15)

Rnds 9-11) 15 hdc (15) [3 Rnds]

Rnd 12) (3 hdc, 1 hdc-dec)x3 (12)

Rnds 13-15) 12 hdc (12) [3 Rnds]

Rnd 16) (2 hdc, 1 hdc-dec)x3 (9)

Rnds 17-18) 9 hdc (9) [2 rnds]

Rnd 19) Flatten the ear and crochet on both sides at the same time: make 4 sc

FO and leave a long tail for sewing.

Repeat to make the 2nd ear.

Head – Double the yarn. Use MC and a 3.5mm hook.

Rnd 1) 8 sc in the MR (8)

Rnd 2) 8 inc (16)

Rnd 3) (1 sc, 1 inc)x8 (24)

Rnd 4) (2 sc, 1 inc)x8 (32)

Rnds 5-10) 32 sc (32) [6 rnds]

Rnd 11) 11 sc, 5 inc, 11 sc, 5 inc (42)

Rnds 12-14) 42 sc (42) [3 rnds]

Rnd 15) (5 sc, 1 dec)x6 (36)

Rnds 16-17) 36 sc (36) [2 rnds]

Rnd 18) (4 sc, 1 dec)x6 (30)

Start stuffing and add rattle ball

Rnd 19) (3 sc, 1 dec)x6 (24)

Rnd 20) (2 sc, 1 dec)x6 (18)

Finish stuffing

Rnd 21) (1 sc, 1 dec)x6 (12)

Rnd 22) 6 dec (6)

FO and leave a long tail for assembly.

Ruffle – Use both CC (doubled yarn, 1 of each color) and a 3.5mm hook

The 2ch at the beginning of each rnd do not count as a st.

Rnd 1) 2 ch, 12 dc in the MR (12) close with 1 sl-st in the 2nd ch

Rnd 2) 2 ch, 2 dc in each st (24) close with 1 sl-st in the 2nd ch

Rnd 3) 2 ch, 3 dc in each st (72) close with 1 sl-st in the 2nd ch

FO and leave a tail for sewing.

Since we’re using 2 CC, I recommend using 1 CC for the bow and the other for the base.

Bow – Use a CC and a 3mm hook

Rnd 1) In a MR, make: (2 ch, 2 hdc, 2 ch, 1 sl-st)x2

Close the MR.

Rnd 2) Make (2 sc in the 2ch, 1 sc in each hdc, 2 sc in the 2ch, 1 sl-st in the MR)x2

FO and leave a long tail (about 60 cm). Wrap the tail tightly a few times around the center of the bow, then make a know with beginning and end tail.

Base – Use a CC and a 3mm hook

Row 1) 23 ch, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, make 22 sc (22)

Rows 2-10) 1 ch and turn, 22 sc (22) [9 rows] *

*Adapt the length of the base if necessary. You may need more of fewer rows depending on your tension, yarn and wooden ring. The 1st and last rows must barely touch when you wrap the base around the ring.

Assembly

The inc from rnd 11 (cheeks) must be on the sides of the head.

Sew the ears on the head, between rnds 3-4. Leave about 6 free sts between the ears on the back of the head.

Sew the bow next to one of the ears.

Embroidery

Embroider the eyes between rnds 10-11, leave 2 free sts between the eyes: Make 1 straight line in the space of 5 sts, pull out 1 rnd above, in the middle. Pass needle under the thread and insert it back in the same st. Pull out in the outer corner of the eye. Make two eyelashes diagonally in the space of 1 st: insert needle 1 st above, pull out in the outer corner again, insert needle 1 rnd above, in the next st over. Repeat on the other side to make the 2nd eye.

Embroider the nose 1 rnd below, in the middle of the eyes, in the space 1 st. Go over the st 3 times. Make a vertical line in the space of 4 sts, going under the nose.

Pull out with beginning tail, tie a knot with both tails and hide them inside the head.

Find the middle of the base (row 5, 11th st). Pass the tails from the head inside the MR of the ruffle and in the middle of the base. Wrap the tails as tightly as possible around the wooden ring a few times and tie a knot. Cut the yarn.

Sew the first and last rows of the base together around the wooden ring.

Use a tail from the juggle to sew the ruffle to the head, around the 1st rnd. Use the other tail (of same color as the base) to sew a few sts of the ruffle to the base.
