Free Pattern · Bunny Blankie

There’s something extra special about this bonnie in a blankie 🤭 – Not only is it soft, cuddly, and easy to make… it’s also made entirely with yarn that’s now available in the shop! I’m thrilled to introduce some beautiful new Scheepjes yarns to the Boulette & Cie collection, including the fuzzy-soft Sweetheart Soft Brush used in this project. Whether you’re here for the squish or the stash restock, you’ll find everything you need to bring this little darling to life.

So let’s get started!

Materials

This pattern was designed using Bulky #5 fuzzy yarn and skinny chenille yarn, but you can use different yarn types / weights. These are the references of yarns used in my projects:

Bunny: Scheepjes Sweetheart Soft 05 (20g)

Blanket: Scheepjes Sweetheart Soft Brush 534 (35g)

Collar and Blanket Detail: Scheepjes Little Darling 406 Toad (10g)

Yarn for embroidery: Scheepjes Little Darling 415 (pink) for the nose, and colors 401; 410 for the eyes – or 12 mm safety eyes.

If you don’t have access to Scheepjes Sweetheart Soft, Premier Little Bunny and Bernat Pipsqueak are possible substitutes. Do not use safety eyes if making this for a baby under the age of 3.

Recommended Hooks: 4.5 mm and 5.5 mm

Other Materials: Tapestry needle; scissors; fiberfill, stitch marker.

Notes

This pattern is written in U.S. terminology.

In the Rnd: Repeat stitches in ( ) X number of times. Example: (1 sc, 1 inc)x6 = make 1 single crochet and 1 increase a total of 6 times.

At the end of each Rnd: The number in ( ) represents the total number of sts in that round.

All sts between { } must be crocheted in the same st, like an increase.

Finished size: 21 cm (8.3 in) from ear to edge of the blanket. Blanket diameter: 25 cm (10 in) with recommended hook sizes and materials.

Head

Use your main color (Scheepjes Sweetheart Soft 05) and a 4.5 mm hook.

Tip: With fuzzy yarn, it’s best to keep a loose tension or you may have difficulties seeing your stitches; the fuzz will cover any gaps you may have.

Rnd 1) 8 sc in a MR (8)

Rnd 2) 8 inc (16)

Rnd 3) (1 sc, 1 inc)x8 (24)

Rnds 4-5) 24 sc (24) [2 rnds]

Rnd 6) (3 sc, 1 inc)x6 (30)

Rnds 7-9) 30 sc (30) [3 rnds]

Rnd 10) (4 sc, 1 inc)x6 (36)

Rnd 11) 36 sc (36)

Rnd 12) (1 sc, 1 dec)x12 (24)

Safety eyes: Insert safety eyes between rnds 7-8. Leave 5 free st spaces between the eyes.

Stuff the head firmly.

Rnd 13) (2 sc, 1 dec)x6 (18)

Rnd 14) (1 sc, 1 dec)x6 (12)

Finish stuffing

Rnd 15) (1 sc, 1 dec)x4 (8)

FO leaving a long tail for sewing. DO NOT close the last Rnd of the head.

Embroidered eyes: Use Rnds 6-7 and 7-8 to embroider the eyes.

Nose Embroidery: Use pink yarn, leave a beginning tail. Embroider a horizontal line between the eyes on Rnds 8-9, use 3 sts. Repeat 3-4 times, pull out 2 rnds below, centered. Insert needle under the threads of the nose, centered, in order to create a vertical line. Pull out anywhere in the head. Tie a knot with both tails and hide them inside the head.

Head Shaping

Cut a long piece of yarn in your main color.

Insert needle in the last Rnd of the head. Leave a beginning tail. Pull out in the outer corner of the eye, skip one st space and insert needle in the inner corner or the eye. Pull out in the inner corner of the second eye, insert needle again in the outer corner and pull out under the head, next to the beginning tail. Pull both tails gently but firmly, the dent under the eyes should be similar on both sides. Tie a tight knot and hide tails inside the head.

Ears (x2)

We’re going to start working in rows and finish the ear working in rounds. Ch1-t = chain 1 and turn work.

R1) Ch 3, start in the 2nd ch from the hook: 2 sc (2)

R2) Ch1-t, 2 inc (4)

R3-R6) Ch1-t, 4 sc (4) [4 rows]

R7) Ch1-t, skip 1 st, 3 sc (3)

R8) Ch1-t, skip 1 st, 2 sc (2)

R9) Ch1-t, 2 sc (2)

Now we’re going to work in rounds, all around the ear. Sts in { } are worked in the same st.

Rnd 10) Do not turn, 9 sc on the side, 2 sc at the top, 9 sc on the side, 2 sc at the bottom (22)

Rnd 11) 9 sc, {1 sc, 1 hdc}, {1 hdc, 1 sc}, 11 sc (24)

FO leaving a long tail. Sew the first and last sts of the last Rnd together in order to close the base.

Bunny Assembly

Sew the base of the ears vertically on top of the head, between Rnds 1-2. Leave roughly 3-4 free st spaces on the front between the ears.

Collar

Use Scheepjes Little Darling (here I’m using Toad) and a 4.5 mm hook.

We’ll sew the collar using the beginning tail, make sure to leave a long enough tail and don’t weave it in.

Rnd 1) 8 sc in a MR (8)

Rnd 2) 8 inc (16)

Now we’re going to work joining rounds. The ch1 won’t count as a st.

Rnd 3) Slst in the 1st st and ch1: (1 hdc, 1 hdc-inc)x8 (24)

Rnd 4) Slst in the 1st st and ch1: 24 hdc-inc (48)

Rnd 5) Slst in the 1st st and ch1: (1 sc, ch2)x48 (48 without the 2ch)

Don’t forget to ch2 afater every sc, not just at the beginning.

FO leaving a short tail, weave in end tail.

Collar Assembly

Using the end tail from the head, sew the last 8 sts of the head to Rnd 1 of the collar. Make sure the right side of the collar is facing upwards and touching the bottom of the bunny’s head. Secure yarn and weave in end.

DO NOT weave in beginning tail from the collar yet, we’re going to use it later to sew the collar to the blanket.

Blankie

Use your contrasting fuzzy yarn color (Scheepjes Sweetheart Soft Brush 534) and a 5.5 mm hook. Crochet loosely.

Rnd 1) 8 sc in a MR (8)

Rnd 2) 8 inc (16)

Now we’re going to work joining rounds. The ch2 won’t count as a st.

Rnd 3) Slst, ch2: (1 dc, 1 dc-inc)x8 (24)

Rnd 4) Slst, ch2: (2 dc, 1 dc-inc)x8 (32)

Rnd 5) Slst, ch2: (3 dc, 1 dc-inc)x8 (40)

Rnd 6) Slst, ch2: (4 dc, 1 dc-inc)x8 (48)

Rnd 7) Slst, ch2: (5 dc, 1 dc-inc)x8 (56)

Rnd 8) Slst, ch2: (6 dc, 1 dc-inc)x8 (64)

Rnd 9) Slst, ch2: 1 dc, ch2 and skip the next 2 sts, (3 dc in the same st, ch2, skip the next 2 sts)x20, 1 dc in the last st (21 dc clusters and 21 ch-sp)

Rnd 10) Slst, sc 1 to get to the ch-sp, slst in the ch-sp and ch2. Crochet in the ch-sp only: (5 dc in the ch-sp, ch3)x21 (21 dc clusters and 21 ch-sp)

Border) Change to the color of the border (Little Darling Toad), FO your fuzzy yarn. Use a 4.5 mm hook: *1 sc in each dc, in the ch-sp: 2 sc, ch2, 2 sc* repeat all around, slst in the 1st st.

FO and weave in ends.

Blankie Assembly

With the right side of the blanket facing upwards, place the bunny’s head and collar on top of the 1st round of the blankie. Use the beginning tail from the collar to sew Rnd 2 of the collar onto Rnd 2 of the blankie. Pull yarn tightly after every stitch so it won’t be visible from the bottom of the blankie. Once you finished going all around Rnd 2, sew a few sts of Rnd 14 of the head through the collar and blankie to secure all the elements in place. Secure yarn and weave in end.
