Sam the Snowman – Free Crochet Pattern
Christmas is near 🎄 and usually that means busy season for makers! Today I’m going to share with you one of my biggest Christmas Market sellers (and also a super cute decoration for your home). This pattern is quick and easy to make, give it a try and I’m sure you’ll fall in love with Sam.
I designed Sam last year for a market and shared the pattern on my IG page (@boulette.et.cie), but I used mixed fibers (cotton and chenille) which I’m now not so happy about, so I made a few changes and here it is… the new Sam! 😄

Materials:
To make Sam the Snowman you’re going to need
- Super Bulky Chenille or Blanket yarn in: white, black, orange and a contrast color for the scarf and top hat detail.
- 5mm and 6mm hooks
- 1 pair of safety eyes (I used 12mm with blanket yarn and 10mm with chenille yarn)
- 3 buttons (optional)
- Black cotton yarn for embroidery (about 40cm-15in)
- Fiberfill, stitch markers, scissors, tapestry needle, sewing needle (for buttons)
- 2 small sticks for the arms (optional)
- A piece of cardboard or plastic
- Glue
Abbreviations:
- MR – magic ring
- FO – fasten off
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- sl-st – slip stitch
- ch – chain
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- rnd – round
- inc – increase
- dec – decrease
- BLO – back loops only
- FLO – front loops only
Notes:
- This pattern is written in U.S terminology. You can use any yarn weight or type, adapt your hook size accordingly (finished size may vary).
- Size: Sam measures about 18 cm – 7 in with blanket yarn (hat excluded) and 15 cm – 6 in with chenille yarn.
- Suggestion: Personally, I like to make the body and head with blanket yarn and the accessories with chenille yarn, but you can definitely use the same yarn for the whole project. If you want to make a bigger snowman but don’t have blanket yarn, you can double your chenille yarn for the head and body.
- Closing the last rnd: Using a tapestry needle, go though the front loop of each st in the last rnd and pull yarn to close. Make a little knot in one of the sts and hide the tail.
- Work in continuous spirals, do not join rounds or turn work unless instructed in the pattern.
- I’m a lefty! If you’re right-handed, you’ll notice that some of my pictures may look inverted when compared to your work. Don’t worry! This won’t change the instructions of the pattern or the final result.
- NO SEW version: If you’re a busy maker with no time for sewing, you can glue the hat to the head and use smaller safety eyes instead of the buttons on the body. Just make sure you add them on rnds 8,10,12 before closing the body.

Body and head – Use white yarn and a 6mm crochet
Rnd 1) 6 sc in a MR (6)
Rnd 2) 6 inc (12)
Rnd 3) (1 sc, 1 inc)x6 (18)
Rnd 4) (2 sc, 1 inc)x6 (24)
Rnd 5) (3 sc, 1 inc)x6 (30)
Rnd 6) BLO 30 sc around (30)
Rnds 7-12) 30 sc around (30) [6 rnds]
Cut a round piece of cardboard or plastic that has approximately the same diameter as the base of your snowman. Apply glue and place it on the bottom of the body so your snowman can stand.

Stuff the body firmly as you go

If you want to use safety eyes on the body instead of sewing buttons, add them now on rnds 8,10 and 12, in the middle of the front.

Insert safety eyes between rnds 21-22, leave 3 free sts between the eyes

Stuff the head firmly

FO and close the last round.
Top Hat – Use black yarn, contrast color and a 5mm hook
Start with black yarn
Rnd 1) 8 sc in a MR (8)
Rnd 2) 8 inc (16)
Rnd 3) BLO 16 sc around (16)
Rnds 4-6) 16 sc around (16) [3 rnds]
Change to contrast color, do not FO black yarn
Rnd 7) 16 sl-st around (16)
Rnd 8) BLO 16 sc around (16)
FO contrast color, change to black
Rnd 9) 16 sl-st around (16)
Rnd 10) FLO (1 sc, 1 inc)x8 (24)
Rnd 11) 24 sc around (24)
FO and leave a long tail for sewing. Stuff lightly. If you prefer, you can glue the hat onto the head instead of sewing, in this case weave in ends.
Scarf – Use contrast color and a 6mm hook
Rnd 1) Ch 42, starting in the 3rd ch from the hook, make 40 hdc (40)
FO and weave in ends.
Carrot – Use orange yarn and a 5mm hook
We are going to crochet the carrot/nose directly onto the body.
Hold your snowman upside down (last rnd up) with the face turned towards you. Insert hook horizontally one rnd below the eyes (rnd 20-21), between the eyes. Attach yarn with a sl-st.
Rnd 1) Ch 4, starting the 2nd ch from the hook, make 1 sl-st, 2 sc (3)
FO leaving a tail. Using a tapestry needle, insert tail in the same st as beginning tail and pull out on the other side. Pass yarn through the 1st ch and insert it back in the same st, pull out with beginning tail again. Make a knot using both tails and hide them inside the body.
Embroidery
Using black cotton yarn and a tapestry needle, embroider the face details: make a long line in the space of 5 sts on rnd 19, pull out one rnd below on rnd 18 in the middle, pass needle under the thread and insert it back in the same st.
Make two eyebrows diagonally, aligned with the eyes, on rnds 22-23 in the space of 2 sts.
Final Details
Sew rnd 10 of the hat onto the head, a little tilted to the side.
Sew the buttons on rnds 8,10 and 12 of, in the front of the body.
Add the scarf.
Insert a little stick on each side of the body, on rnd 11.
You can also add some blush to the cheeks if you want to.
Sam the Snowman is ready !
